Best Hawaii beaches can display odd behavior? I think a beach that disappears every winter and after a big storm is quite odd, don’t you?

What’s up with this beach? During the winter months and during storms the tide pulls the sand out to sea. Fortunately, there is an underwater basin off shore that collects the sand until the tide shifts and returns it to the beach.

You probably won’t be surprised when I tell you that this beach is also referred to as Disappearing Sands Beach or Magic Sands Beach. This beach has one more alias—La’aloa Bay Beach.

A note of caution: if you see the sand disappearing from the beach don’t go in the water! This is a good example of a rip current or rip tide as some call it. Stay on the beach and enjoy the show!

Is this a safe swimming beach or not?

During the winter there tends to be the rip current. The summer may be a good time to swim here. This is one of the few Hawaii beaches with a lifeguard. Because beach conditions constantly change the safest thing to do is ask the lifeguard. It’s his job (and yours) to keep you safe.

Why is this on the list of best Hawaii beaches?

    • Offshore sandbar for good swimming and boogie boarding except during winter and high surf
    • Lifeguard
    • Restrooms and showers
    • Picnic area with barbeques
    • Shade
    • Volleyball area

One difficulty is parking. There is no parking lot and this small beach can get crowded. You need to park along the road so arrive early is you plan to tote kids and a lot of stuff.

One trick I use often is have my husband drop me, the brood, and the stuff off near the beach (mall, airport terminal or wherever) where we wait while he parks. When he arrives we work together to move everything but the kitchen sink onto the beach.

If someone in your group likes boogie boarding, the boogie boarders were congregating on the left side of the beach when we were there. It looked like that’s where the best waves were.

On calm days snorkeling is supposed to be good on the right side of the beach. Unfortunately, none of our visits were on a calm day so I can’t comment on the quality of snorkeling here.

Want to learn to snorkel or find out about snorkeling gear ?

The lifeguard, facilities, shade, and potential for good swimming, snorkeling, and boogie boarding makes this a great beach for singles, couples, and families with all ages of kids.

It’s worth a visiting the Best Hawaii beaches for odd behavior!
