Kauai car rentals are important for anyone planning to explore the island. Many of the best sights on Kauai are only accessible if you have your own transportation. You can easily rent a car from the booths across the street from the main terminal at Lihu’e Airport.
When choosing Kauai car rentals, keep these cost saving tips in mind:
Look for a car rental and airfare package.
Look for packages that that include hotel and car rental.
Shop online.
Use an Entertainment Book for savings on hotels, car rentals, and restaurants. We buy a $20 book annually as part of a local school fund raiser. The total savings in the book is easily ten times the cost.
Cars may be in short supply in high season and on holidays so book ahead.

Renting a car on Kauai if you are under 25 years of age.
If you are between 21 and 25 you take advantage of Kauai car rentals. The bad news is it will cost you about $25 extra per day for being young and reckless according to (insurance company statistics). Alamo and Dollar are your best bets.
If you are under 21 you can rent a car at U-haul Truck & Car Rental and Island Cars if you have proof of insurance and a cash deposit.
Rental car versus 4-wheel drive vehicle?
Kauai car rentals are fine for most visitors but it depends on what you intend to do with your rental while you're on the island. If you plan to stay on paved roads, avoid the added expense of a 4-wheel drive vehicle. There are lots of rugged roads in Kauai but we managed to get by without a 4-wheel drive. If you can’t help but go off road to explore, by all means, fork over the extra cash ($60-90 per day!).
Rental car versus 2-wheel vehicle?
Rental cars are great if you’re going to drive long distances, but if you just need to get around town a scooter can be a practical solution, except maybe on Kauai. Island Mopeds (808-245-7177) rents mopeds for $75 a day!
If you’ve always wanted to be cool on a Harley, what better place to do it than Hawaii? Imagine those pictures….
Kauai Harley-Davidson in Puhi (808-241-7020) and Two Wheels in Kapa’a (808-821-2333) both rent Harleys. Two Wheels charges $139 per 10 hours or $179 if you keep it overnight. Hey, I said it would be cool, not cheap!
Boring rental car versus cool classic car?
Kauai is a great place for classic car enthusiasts. If you have some money burning a hole in your pocket why not rent a ’66 Mustang, '66 Fairlane or '66 Galaxy convertible from Tropicars (808-635-3799)?
These cars are the old-fashioned big heavy metal and chrome giants. They don’t handle well in sand or on curvy steep downgrades. That is why Tropicars won’t allow you to take them to Polihale beach or up into Waimea Canyon.
You won’t find them at the airport with the new millennium rental cars but they will deliver the car there if you request it. You’ll need to fork over $149 a day or $499 per week for the privilege of driving one of these classic beauties. This was a cool option. Unfortunately Tropicars is now closed.
