I’m between the ages of 21 and 25. Can I rent a car on the Big Island?

There is good news and bad news. The good news is yes you can take advantage of Big Island rental cars. The bad news is it will cost you about $20-25 extra for being young and reckless. Alamo and Dollar are your best bets.

I’m under 21. Can I rent a car on the Big Island?

There is good news and bad news. The good news is you can rent a moped or a bike or take the bus. The bad news is you can’t rent a car on the Big Island.

Is a car OK or do I need a 4-wheel drive vehicle?

Big Island car rentals are fine for most visitors but it depends on what you intend to do while on the island. If you plan to stay on paved roads, avoid the added expense of a 4-wheel drive vehicle. If you can’t help but go off road to explore, by all means, fork over the extra cash ($30-80 per day).

You need a 4-wheel drive vehicle if you want to visit: Green Sand (Papalokea) Beach (and avoid the long, hot walk), the short steep paved road down into Waipi’o Valley (requires extra low gear), Saddle Road (check to make sure you don’t void the insurance even with a 4-wheel drive vehicle), and a number of other off the beaten path opportunities.

I just want to get around in Kailua-Kona. Does anyone rent scooters?

Sure. Hawaii rental cars are great if you’re going to drive long distances, but if you just need to get around town a scooter is a practical solution. DJ’s Rentals (808-329-1700) in Kona rents mopeds for $45 a day.

Can I rent a motorcycle?

You’re in luck. If you’ve always wanted to be cool on a Harley, what better place to do it than Hawaii? Imagine those pictures….

Kona Harley-Davidson (808-326-9887) rents Harleys for $125 per day and DJ’s Rentals (808-329-1700) in Kona charges $120-145 per day depending on the type of bike. Hey, I said it would be cool, not cheap!

Is it true I can rent a Motor Home on the Big Island?

Amazingly enough it’s true. The Big Island is the only Hawaiian island where staying in a motor home is a viable alternative to staying in a hotel. Since this is still new to the Big Island there aren’t any RV parks or facilities. The only places you can dump are in Kona and Hilo so use public restrooms whenever possible.

Campgrounds and beach parks are the best places for parking. Keep in mind you may need a camping permit. You can try Namakani Paio (808-967-7321) at Volcanoes National Park , Kapa’a Beach Park in North Kohala and Spencer Beach Park. Remember, technically you can park anywhere.

You can get a 22 ft RV from Harper (800-852-9993) for $186 per day (plus a $200 fee per rental from Kona). You must arrange rentals in advance of your trip and you’ll need an RV rider from you own insurance company.
