If you are traveling with a family, where to stay becomes particularly important. A Big Island hotel is not always the best choice.
At the volcano you can find a variety of Hawaii accommodations ranging from a standard hotel room to a Vacation Home to a Bed & Breakfast. Some have kitchens, others provide breakfast. Your final choice will depend on the size of your family, the age of your children and how much you want to spend.

All the places listed here are either inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or in Volcano village about a mile from the park entrance. You can find more Big Island hotels in Hilo about 30 minutes or so from the volcano. If you have a golfer traveling with you, they'll be happy to know there is a golf course at the volcano!
Big Island Hotels INSIDE the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Name: Volcano House
Price: <$-$$
Location: in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the rim of Kilauea caldera
Type: Hotel
Description: This hotel has 42 rooms and a restaurant. Rooms near the busy dining area are quite noisy so try for a room with a crater view as far from the dining room as possible. We ate here a couple of times. It's more like cafeteria food than fine dining. Drive a mile down the road to Volcano Village for better dining choices.
Contact info: (808-967-7321) Crater Rim Drive, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Island of Hawaii, HI 96718
Rating: +++ (noisy and bad food)
Name: Namakani Paio Cabins
Price: <<$
Type:simple cabins
Description: OK so this isn't a Big Island hotel but it is located inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There are ten cabins with a bathhouse close to all of the cabins
Extras: Bedding. This is a step above tent camping. Bring extra blankets or extra warm pajamas to sleep in. It gets very cold at night.

Big Island Bed & Breakfasts
Big Island hotels are hard to find at the volcano. Bed & Breakfasts are my favorite alternative to staying in a hotel. We met some interesting people, learned some tips on getting the most out of our volcano visit and had some awesome breakfasts--my favorite meal of the day!
Name: Carson’s Volcano Cottage
Price: $
Location: in a tree fern forest within Volcano Village. Note: My husband complained about the dampness but this is the rainforest. Expect everything to feel damp and smell a bit musty or moldy.
Type: Bed & Breakfast
Description: four rooms, one cabin. The Winslows have taken over from the Carsons and have been renovating.
Extras: Huge, amazing breakfast included. I know it’s a B&B and therefore is supposed to include breakfast but this is the only B&B where my husband didn’t complain about lack of food or lack of variety of food. It’s that huge!
